Obese Child taken from mother, placed into foster care
What do you think? Should a severely obese child be taken from their parents on grounds of child abuse? Keep in mind this 8 year old weighed 250 lbs(got that number from the CNN video about this news article). The average 8 year old should weigh 46 lbs so this kid weighs 5.5 times the normal weight. Let’s think of the implications of weighing 5.5 times your normal weight. There’s plenty of health complications that can happen such as heart attack, stroke all the way down to achy joints from the weight. There is also psychological implications too, such as low self esteem and what may be a lack of self control.
But then again can we blame the parents for this? They seem to be blaming the school lunches. Well, not every kid that goes to that particular school weighs that much. Think about it, that child would normally have to eat 5X his daily calories to weight 5 times his normal weight. While there are some hereditary and other problems that could make gaining so much weight easier I still call foul here. His mom claims that she bought him a bicycle and other various things to try and help him lose weight. Even sent him to a “fat camp” where he was successful in losing weight, then gained it back when he returned home. So it would seem he can lose weight when in the right environment. Also remember his mom was warned over a year ago about this and they gave what I believe is ample time to correct this problem.
Another argument is that taking the child from his parents and putting him into foster care will do more harm then good. I am unsure about this, seeing as I don’t know alot about foster care. People have said that it will cause problems between the child and the parents afterwards. Well any type of child abuse will cause a problem between the abused child and the abusers. I believe the child is better off away from his parents where he can possibly find adults that will actually take care of him and help him to be healthy.
Again, what do you think on this?
